A hand is counterfeited when a new board card makes part of its previous strength redundant or reduces its relative value. This often affects small pairs, two pair or qualifying low hands. Being counterfeited does not automatically mean the hand loses.
Example of Counterfeit:
You hold 4-4 on a 9-9-8 flop. An eight on the turn puts two higher pairs on the board. Your pocket fours no longer contribute to the best two-pair combination.
