A backdoor straight draw requires helpful cards on both the turn and river to make a straight. It cannot be completed by just one new card from the flop. Its value depends on the available runouts and whether the resulting straight would be strong.
Example of Backdoor Straight Draw:
You hold 9-8 on a 7-K-2 flop. A six on the turn followed by a ten on the river gives you a ten-high straight.
