The first WSOP Super Circuit Canada has already produced enormous fields at Playground, and now the biggest test of the festival begins.
The CA$5,000 Main Event got underway on September 3 with a CA$10 million guarantee.
It is an ambitious number even by modern WSOP standards.
But after a record-breaking opening week in Quebec, there are already signs that Canadian players and international visitors have arrived in serious numbers.
3,484 Entries Set New Playground Record
The clearest indication came in the CA$500 Mini Main Event.
A total of 3,484 entries were recorded across its starting flights, making it the largest single tournament field ever hosted at Playground.
Canadian Daniel Haim emerged from the enormous field to win his first WSOP Circuit ring and CA$185,000.
The tournament generated an official prize pool of CA$1,289,503 after beginning with a CA$500,000 guarantee.
It was an early demonstration of exactly why the WSOP chose Montreal for its first Canadian Super Circuit.
Poker Type previewed the WSOP Super Circuit Canada before cards went in the air, with Daniel Negreanu, Michael Mizrachi and a sizeable group of poker creators among the players expected at Playground.
The attendance figures have now added substance to that initial expectation.
Canadian Championship Quadruples Its Guarantee
Moving considerably higher up the buy-in ladder did little to slow participation.
The CA$2,300 Super Circuit Canadian Championship attracted 996 entries and generated an official CA$2,014,360 prize pool.
Its advertised guarantee had been CA$500,000.
That means the tournament ultimately produced more than four times the money originally guaranteed.
It is another significant result for Playground after the venue set a WSOP Circuit prize-pool record in 2025.
That Main Event attracted 1,978 entries and generated CA$4,450,500.
The new Super Circuit was designed to go considerably further.
CA$10 Million Main Event Starts in Canada
The centerpiece of the festival began on Thursday, September 3.
Players will paid CA$5,000 to enter the WSOP Super Circuit Main Event, with multiple starting flights running through the opening weekend.
The guarantee is CA$10 million.
That number alone is more than twice the entire prize pool generated by Playground’s record-setting 2025 Circuit Main Event, illustrating the scale of the step being attempted.
The early tournaments provide encouragement, but filling a CA$10 million guarantee is a very different challenge.
Thousands of entries will be required.
Playground now has several days to find them.
WSOP Circuit Is Expanding Well Beyond Its Traditional Stops
Canada is also part of a broader period of international expansion for the WSOP Circuit.
We recently covered the return of the WSOP Circuit to Paris, where 13 rings will be awarded during a September festival at the new Partouche Pasino Club.
At the same time, the WSOP Circuit has arrived in Mexico City for the first time.
Those stops are very different from the Canadian Super Circuit in scale, but together they demonstrate how far the Circuit has moved from being primarily a collection of regional North American tournaments.
Paris gives European players another route to a WSOP ring.
Mexico City brings the Circuit into the Mexican capital for the first time.
Canada has been handed something bigger again, with 18 ring events and more than CA$14 million in advertised guarantees across the festival.
The CA$10 million Main Event accounts for most of that figure.
Circuit Rings Still Matter
The expansion only works if players continue to value what the Circuit offers.
For many, the money will always be the first consideration.
But a WSOP Circuit ring remains an important career marker, particularly for players who have not yet won WSOP hardware.
That was illustrated recently when Curtis King won his first WSOP Circuit ring in the Cherokee Main Event.
King had described 2026 as the worst year of his poker career before turning it into the year of his biggest tournament victory.
Canada will create another group of ring winners.
One of them could leave Playground with considerably more.
Negreanu Chasing a Missing Piece of His Poker Career
Daniel Negreanu is among the most recognizable players associated with the festival.
Despite eight WSOP bracelets and more than $60 million in recorded live tournament winnings, the Canadian has never won a WSOP Circuit ring.
That makes his appearance at Playground unusual.
Negreanu has already achieved almost everything available at the World Series of Poker, but a Circuit victory remains absent from his résumé.
Winning his first one in Canada would make the story considerably more significant.
Michael Mizrachi is also involved in the festival, while Abby Merk, Corey Eyring, Masato Yokosawa, Greg Goes All In and Andy Stacks are among the poker creators connected to the Creator Championship surrounding the Main Event.
That combination of major professionals, creators and a record-chasing tournament gives the inaugural Canadian Super Circuit more than just a large guarantee.
Canadian Poker Faces Its Biggest Test Yet
The Super Circuit has already delivered two numbers that stand out.
There were 3,484 entries in the Mini Main.
There were another 996 in the CA$2,300 Canadian Championship.
One tournament set a Playground field record. The other generated more than four times its original guarantee.
Those results do not automatically mean the CA$10 million Main Event will reach its target.
They do mean it begins with momentum.
The WSOP has been pushing the Circuit into new markets and giving established poker destinations increasingly ambitious festivals.
Paris is underway.
Mexico City has joined the map.
And in Quebec, Playground is attempting something Canada has never hosted before.
The opening week has already broken records.
Now comes the CA$10 million test.
