Curtis King arrived at the WSOP Circuit stop in Cherokee describing 2026 as the worst year of his poker career.
He left with his first WSOP Circuit ring and the biggest tournament victory of his life.
King completed the turnaround by winning the WSOP Circuit Cherokee Main Event in North Carolina, surviving the final stages of a large field to secure a career-best payday.
It’s the kind of result that can change the complexion of an entire poker year very quickly.
Curtis King Turns His Poker Year Around
Tournament poker can make months of frustration disappear in a matter of days.
King entered the Cherokee Main Event after struggling through 2026, but put himself into contention as the tournament moved towards its final stages.
Eleven players returned for the final day on Monday.
King still had plenty of work ahead of him, but eventually navigated the remaining field and reached heads-up play with the WSOP Circuit title on the line.
Victory gave him something he had never previously managed: a WSOP Circuit ring.
More importantly financially, the first-place prize became the largest recorded tournament cash of his career.
The Bucket Hat Battle for the WSOP Circuit Ring
There was another distinctive feature to the closing stages.
King and his final opponent both played heads-up wearing bucket hats, creating an unusual visual as they battled for the Main Event title.
But underneath the matching headwear was a considerably more important fight.
A WSOP Circuit Main Event victory carries more weight than simply winning another tournament. Circuit rings have become coveted achievements in their own right, while Main Events traditionally attract some of the strongest fields at each stop.
King had never won one before.
Now he has a Main Event ring as his first.
Tournament Poker Can Change Very Quickly
King’s victory is also another example of the brutal variance involved in tournament poker.
A player can spend months travelling, entering tournaments and repeatedly leaving without a meaningful return. One deep run can then transform the year’s financial results.
That doesn’t erase everything that happened before it.
But describing a year as your worst and then immediately producing the largest tournament score of your career is about as dramatic a turnaround as poker allows.
The result should also move King significantly beyond his previous career-high tournament cash.
WSOP Circuit Still Producing Breakthrough Winners
The World Series of Poker may receive the biggest attention each summer in Las Vegas, but the WSOP Circuit continues to provide players across the United States with opportunities to win recognised WSOP titles without entering bracelet events.
Cherokee has become one of the Circuit’s established American stops and regularly produces substantial fields.
For players such as King, that can make a Circuit Main Event victory a major career milestone rather than simply another result on a tournament résumé.
