Charlie Carrel Explains Why He Can’t Attend the WSOP

Charlie Carrel

Charlie Carrel’s poker career includes major live and online titles, but his absence from the Las Vegas World Series of Poker has a more personal explanation. In May 2026, he said an arrest during a 2017 trip had left him unable to enter the United States.

The distinction is important for fans asking why he no longer appears at the summer series. Carrel described a restriction on entering the country, rather than a tournament ban issued by the WSOP.

What Charlie Carrel Said About the US Entry Restriction

In the YouTube account reported by PokerNews in May 2026, Carrel said customs officers found pills while searching his luggage. He described spending one night in a Nevada jail and said he was still unable to return to the US.

“I got arrested in America, and I got banned from America,” he said. That was his explanation for the long gap in his Las Vegas appearances.

The entry restriction is described here as Carrel’s account of his circumstances. His comments do not establish a date when he will be permitted to return.

His 2017 WSOP Main Event Run

Carrel’s last Las Vegas WSOP appearance was in 2017, when he finished 88th in the Main Event for $72,514. The tournament attracted 7,221 players, making that run a significant result even without a final-table finish.

That result helps explain why his absence is noticeable. Carrel had already won the EPT Grand Final High Roller in Monte Carlo in 2015 and the high-buy-in SCOOP Main Event online in May 2017.

For a British professional with that record, the Las Vegas summer series was an obvious stage. It brings the Main Event, a wide range of bracelet tournaments and cash games into the same city, giving established players several reasons to make the trip.

Why This Is Different From a WSOP Poker Ban

An inability to enter the United States affects access to Las Vegas before a player reaches the registration desk. That is different from an organiser excluding someone from its tournaments for conduct at the tables.

The location matters too. A statement about access to the Las Vegas WSOP does not, by itself, establish eligibility for every event using the WSOP name in another country or online.

Carrel’s explanation therefore answers a specific question about his absence from the Nevada series. It should not be stretched into a claim that every poker operator has banned him or that he has stopped playing altogether.

A Quieter Live Schedule, but Continued Poker Work

His reduced live tournament schedule also forms part of the wider picture. Carrel has spent more time on coaching and content, rather than maintaining the travel routine associated with his earlier high-roller years.

His current official website promotes Elite University and playing and streaming on CoinPoker. The course catalogue includes Cash Game Masterclass, Live Tells (Advanced) and The Bankroll Challenge.

YouTube remains another route for following his poker work. His material ranges from low-stakes bankroll sessions to analysis of major tournament hands, giving him a public poker presence without attending the Las Vegas series.

The shift also illustrates the overlap between playing and producing content. Our feature on poker creators and professionals examines why those labels do not describe separate competitive classes.
